What Are Time Relays

Consider a time relay to be the conductor of a control panel. In many setups, if a system's "brain" – such as a PLC or a standard sensor – were to activate every component simultaneously, it would result in massive power spikes or mechanical collisions. Other times, a process simply needs to keep running after the main controller shuts down.

Elko Product

The time relay bridges this gap by taking the initial input and precisely orchestrating the exact moment a connected circuit should power up or shut off.

In practice, time relays deliver three critical functions:

  • Delaying
Holding back an action after a command is received. This safely staggers the ignition of large motors, stopping massive inrush currents from tripping the main breakers during system startup.

  • Extending
Taking a brief trigger and stretching the runtime. This guarantees that critical support systems – like exhaust fans or oil pumps – keep running for a predetermined period even after the primary machine is turned off.

  • Cycling
Executing a repeating loop from a single activation. This automates routine, periodic tasks at precise intervals seamlessly within the panel, without needing complex external programming.

Ultimately, time relays prevent electrical overloads, automate intricate sequences, and ensure that every device activates at exactly the right moment.

Featured Products

With the core functions covered, let's break down the two main time relays in our lineup. The key to positioning these effectively is understanding exactly when a panel builder needs a multi-function unit versus a dedicated single-function model.

CRM -181J "The Specialist"

A dedicated, single-function time relay. Designed specifically for applications where the required function is already known and won't change. Highly cost-effective for standardized machinery requiring one specific timing sequence performed consistently.

CRM-91H "The Multi-Tool"

Equipped with 10 selectable functions. The go-to solution for versatility, it can be programmed on the fly via its rotary dial, switching between different functions. It’s the ideal relay for clients looking for a single SKU that covers multiple timing scenarios.
